A High Frequency Bem for Scattering by Non-convex Obstacles

چکیده
Traditional numerical methods for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems become prohibitively expensive in the high-frequency regime where the scatterer is large compared to the wavelength of the incident wave. In this paper we propose and analyse a hybrid boundary element method (BEM) for a class of non-convex polygonal scatterers. In this method the approximation space is enriched with oscillatory functions which efficiently capture the high-frequency asymptotics of the solution, so that only O(log f) degrees of freedom are required as the frequency f → ∞. This appears to be the first effective hybrid BEM for a class of non-convex obstacles.

AN hp-BEM FOR HIGH FREQUENCY SCATTERING BY CONVEX POLYGONS
Time harmonic acoustic scattering by convex polygons is considered. Standard schemes with piecewise polynomial approximation spaces have a computational cost that grows at least linearly with respect to the wavenumber. Here we extend a h-version Galerkin boundary element method scheme for this problem developed by ChandlerWilde and Langdon to an hp-version of the BEM, for which we demonstrate a...
متن کاملWave-based Discretizations A high-frequency boundary element method for a transmission scattering problem
We consider time-harmonic scattering by penetrable polygonal obstacles in 2D. We present a boundary element method (BEM) based on a hybrid numerical-asymptotic (HNA) approximation space built from oscillatory basis functions. The basis functions are carefully chosen to capture the leading order terms in the highfrequency asymptotic behaviour of the boundary solution. Numerical experiments sugge...
متن کاملA new high-order high-frequency integral equation method for the solution of scattering problems II: Multiple-scattering configurations
We present a high-order, high-frequency solver for the numerical solution of problems of electromagnetic or acoustic scattering by bounded surfaces. This algorithm, which combines the use of an ansatz for the unknown density in a boundary integral formulation with an extension of the ideas of the method of stationary phase, can resolve problems of arbitrarily high-frequencies with a prescribed ...
متن کاملA High-frequency Bem for 3d Acoustic Scattering
The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is a powerful method for simulating scattering of acoustic waves which has many advantages, particularly when the problem concerns an object in an unbounded medium. Its applications are however limited in practice because standard schemes have a computational cost which grows extremely quickly as size and frequency is increased. Fundamentally this occurs becaus...
متن کاملUniform Asymptotic Expansions of Multiple Scattering Iterations
Although every implementation of a recent high frequency multiple scattering solver has displayed a frequency independent operation count, its numerical analysis yet remains as a challenging open problem. This is, in part, due to the absence of detailed information on the uniform asymptotic expansions of multiple scattering iterations. Here we address precisely this issue for a collection of co...
